Gari gojih.

(Like) the kernel of a water-chestnut (singharah).

A Kashmiri curse, meaning ” May your eyes start out of your
head through trouble and sorrow.” Also when a person is not sharp
at finding any thing, another person will sometimes say, ” You, gari
gojih, can’t you see it?”

~ from ‘A Dictionary of Kashmiri Proverbs and Sayings’ by James Hinton Knowles (1885).

  1. These look like chestnuts that grow on trees…not water chestnuts (from what I can make out).

I love the everyday-life pics you post from Srinagar, but most of all, I love the food related ones! 🙂

  2. I think you are right, these are chestnuts and not water chestnuts. I think that's what makes Kashmiri Singhara (those triangular things) different from Punjabi Singhara. Thanks for pointing out.
