Kashmir, 1944

From Louise Morgan’s Flickr Collection [check out the complete collection] having photos of India taken by one Major E Brookman in 1943/4. Louise bought the collection in 1980s from an antique shop in Seven Dials, Brighton, UK for around a dollar. She now plans to visit some of these places.

Shalamar
(I am really intrigued to see that the garden used to be referred as Shalamar, a name that Kashmiris still use even though now Shalimar is in more currency)

  1. Green Grocer: Earrings say she is a Muslim Lady with a 'Ladh' on her Pharen. I think Ladh was never a pundit identity mark, but was made so in later half of the last century ( in my time muslim ladies use to have Ladh inversely on their Pharen.) Pointing it out as you have raised this point in your earlier blogs. Would appreciate your opinion on this. My openion is solely based on the old photographs of Kashmiri muslim ladies posted here. Wishing you and your family a very happy and prosperous 2012. Dinesh Labroo

  2. I have written about it a couple of times (here and here ) I am glad you raised that point. I remember your previous explanation that maybe these were hand me downs from Pandits. But now I have come to the same conclusion maybe relying on ladh isn't the best way to differentiate between Pandit Pheren and Muslim Pheran of Kashmiri women. Pandits do use it as a differentiating feature but maybe this differentiation only cropped up in previous half-century of so. It has been an interesting cultural exercise. Wish you a very happy new year too!
