Dal in Time

Slow primordial death.

Created based on satellite images of Dal Lake dating from 1998 to 2012 made available by Google (here, although they were supposed to have images dating from 1984 but somehow the actual data available is only from 1998. The image came alive and death of the lake became clearly visible by applying certain line filters on the images. I tried something similar for Wular, but there the lake is hardly visible in any case, all one sees is movement of a green cover.

  1. In mid 80's, one day my father pointed out to me at Shiraz Cinema near Khanyar, " this is where we used to catch boat to cross Dal to reach Mughal Gardens". Honestly though i was a boy of 11 or 12 years then, my first reaction was my old man had lost it. Seems process to kill the goose that lays golden eggs had started much ealrier. Dinesh

  2. Yes The Dal lake is shrinking and there is an estimate that within another 60 years there will be no Dal lake……Can one imagine……but we can freeze this if we act now…..My Father had a story to tell us about the Chinar Tree slightly ahead of Nehru Park now on the road, used to be on tiny Island in the Dal lake..the waters were upto the brim of Shankracharaya hill. One morning , about 1920s ,the Dod Goorus bringing milk from Nishat noticed, A Leopard stranded on this island under this chinar Tree. news was sent through and a Hunter possible From Dutchin Family shot it dead. Since then this Chinar was known as "Sueh Booin" Leopard chinar. The lake extended till the foot of the hills……
